According to myth, Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty and lust, was born in a shell. If you ask the people of Mali Ston, a picturesque village on the coast of Croatia, they have no doubt that the shell was an oyster.
This historic Adriatic village is famous for its oyster farming, medieval walls, and stunning views of Mali Ston Bay.

Located at the entrance to the Pelješac Peninsula, a kilometre north-east of sister town Ston, Mali Ston is widely considered to produce some of the world’s finest oysters.
The exceptional quality of its European flat oysters (Ostrea Edulis) is attributed to the unique mix of fresh water and sea water in the bay, where the Neretva River flows into the sea. Frequent winter rains and the extremely clean water also create favourable conditions.
Protected Designation
In 2020, the Mali Ston oyster was inscribed into the European Union Geographical Indications Register and granted the EU Protected Designation of Origin mark.
Generations of shellfish farmers have produced, and continue to produce, mussels and oysters in Mali Ston Bay. Historical records show that European flat oysters have been farmed in the area since the 17th century, and that they were being harvested long before that. There is evidence that they were already a delicacy in ancient Roman times.

A growing number of tourists are discovering the region. If you go to the Mali Ston website, you’ll see a list of producers who offer oyster tastings and oyster farm visits.
Oyster Festival
An event not to be missed is the Oyster Day Festival (Dani malostonske kamenice), traditionally held around the feast of St. Joseph (March 19) when the oysters are at their meatiest and tastiest.
The 2026 festival is being held in Ston, Mali Ston and Brijesta from March 19 to 22. Appealing to foodies, wine lovers, culture and nature lovers, the program includes lectures, workshops, quizzes, guided tours, trips to farms, children’s workshops, entertainment, and of course, wine, oysters and other gastronomic delights.
